Breeding Success Through Partnerships

First Nation entrepreneur, James Walkus from the Kwakuitl Nation, has had incredible success growing his multi-generation, family-run business – James Walkus Fishing Company. Walkus started his career in the commercial fishing industry at age 15 on a leaky skiff. As the wild fish stocks began to decline in the mid 1990s he decided it was time to diversify his business and turned to aquaculture, developing a partnership with Marine Harvest Canada.

Annual BC Shellfish & Seafood Festival Unites Local & International Participants

Running from June 9-19, the 10th Annual BC Shellfish & Seafood Festival kicked off last week in the Comox Valley. As the largest of its kind in Western Canada, the festival offers attendees eleven days of chef demonstrations, gala dinners, educational seminars, aquaculture tours, and more – celebrating the B.C.’s seafood industry, producers and its bounty.

World Oceans Day about Environment and Economy

This Wednesday, June 8th, is World Oceans Day, which was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008 as a day intended “for people to reflect and emphasize the benefits that the oceans can provide and our individual and collective duty to interact with oceans in a sustainable manner so as to meet current needs without compromising those of future generations.”
